Editorial: How much does science cost?

Resumo: Após 30 anos de planejamento e um investimento de 10 bilhões de dólares, o Telescópio Espacial James Webb finalmente foi lançado. Com uma capacidade muito superior ao seu antecessor, o Telescópio Hubble, o James Webb está capturando imagens dos primórdios do Universo e ajudando a reescrever algumas de nossas certezas. Embora o valor investido possa parecer exorbitante, é importante questionar como esse dinheiro poderia ser utilizado para resolver outros problemas. Será que esse investimento na ciência e exploração espacial não trará benefícios para a humanidade em longo prazo?

Abstract: After 30 years of planning and an investment of 10 billion dollars, the James Webb Space Telescope has finally been launched. With a much greater capability than its predecessor, the Hubble Telescope, the James Webb is capturing images of the beginnings of the Universe and helping to rewrite some of our certainties. Although the invested amount may seem exorbitant, it is important to question how this money could be used to solve other problems. Will this investment in science and space exploration not bring benefits to humanity in the long term?
